Aadhaar Card for OCI Cardholders and NRIs
Registration for the Aadhaar card is now open to residents of India. OCI cardholders who have lived in India for a long time (more than 182 days in the 12 months immediately prior to the application date) and have an Indian valid address can also apply for an Indian Aadhaar card. Non-Resident Indians are not eligible for an Aadhaar card if they are an Indian citizen but have not stayed for more than 182 days in the last 12 months. NRI can apply for an Aadhaar Card after completing a 182-day stay in India in the last 12 months. This should be immediately prior to the registration application date.
Eligibility for Aadhaar Card for OCI
Overseas Citizens of India must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Age: Applicant must be at least 3 years old.
- Valid OCI Card: Applicant must have a valid OCI card.
- Valid Stay in India for at least 182 days: OCI cardholders must stay in India for at least 182 consecutive days in the 12 months. This must be immediately prior to the date of application for Aadhaar registration.
- India Address: You need a valid India address to apply for an Aadhaar card in India.
Documents Required for Aadhaar Card for OCI
OCI applicants need to submit certain documents to apply for the Aadhaar card. As per the requirements provided by UIDAI on their official website, here are the documents necessary:
- Valid photo ID proof: PAN card/ OCI card/ driving license/Passport

1. Booking an Appointment:
- Visit UIDAI’s official website.
- From the list appearing in the drop-down menu, click on the ‘My Aadhaar’ option
- Then click on ‘Book an Appointment.’
- Select your location, and click on ‘Proceed’.
- Provide your phone number based in India and the security code, and click on ‘Generate OTP’.
- Provide your email address if the security code is not available. Click the ‘Send OTP’ option to receive your one-time password via SMS and email.
- Select an appointment slot based on your convenience to complete the procedure on the next landing page.
OCIs can also visit any Aadhaar enrolment centre in India directly to book a biometric appointment. The online procedure mentioned above is optional and not the only procedure to apply for an Aadhaar. In order to complete the enrolment, you must be present at your enrolment centre.
2. Document Verification:
OCI cardholders must submit the documents specified by UIDAI to enrol for the Aadhaar card. Please carry all the original documents along with a copy of each with you when you go to the enrolment centre.
3. Visiting Enrolment Centre for Biometrics:
People who are enrolling for the Aadhar card OCI must access the Aadhaar enrolment centre to complete the biometrics procedure. The required steps are as follows,
- All the ten fingers and the iris of both eyes of the applicant are scanned by the UIDAI officer, and the data is stored in the government database.
- Photos of the applicant are taken with the help of a webcam in the enrolment centre itself. The same image will be pasted on the Aadhaar card as well.
The collected data will generate a unique ID to prevent the two Aadhaar cards from being the same, in case a duplicate application is already available in the Government database. When the registration process is complete, authorities will combine demographic and biometric information to generate an Aadhaar number and send a paper copy to your address.
