Several individuals in India remain unaware of the intricacies related to e-Aadhaar. Learning how to access and use it can help in one’s banking transactions and several other purposes. To know the details regarding e-Aadhaar, keep reading!
Residents can use E-Aadhaar to print their Aadhaar letters directly from the UIDAI resident portal. Residents can use the E-Aadhaar service to download a digitally signed PDF letter once their Aadhaar is generated instead of waiting for it to arrive in the mail.
An Aadhaar card is a physical document that you must carry whenever necessary. Doing so increases the risk of misplacing such an essential document. e-Aadhaar provides an alternative whereby Aadhaar holders can carry a digital version of the card. This allows them to authenticate transactions and services without a physical Aadhaar card.
In the digital version of your Aadhaar card, the following details are available:
Such information is similar to what you will find in the physical copy of your Aadhaar card. This is why you can use an e-Aadhaar easily to carry out any official paperwork. However, apart from access to all these necessary details, an e-Aadhaar comes with several benefits. Refer to the following section to know them!
Instead of carrying the physical Aadhaar card everywhere, one can use the digital version of it to complete any official work without a hassle. This is password-protected, which makes it safer than the physical copy of Aadhaar. Here are some useful perks it comes with:
Since this is an electronic form of Aadhaar, you can use it anytime and anywhere you want. You can simply use your mobile device to download it. Alternatively, you can open the PDF file using the password if it is already available on your phone. Password protection makes it secure, and you do not have to worry about your personal information getting misused.
While trying to open a new bank account or when applying for a passport, certain identity documents are required, including an Aadhaar card. However, an e-Aadhaar makes the documentation process less time-consuming by minimising the paperwork. Since the information remains the same, you can use the digital copy for verification purposes.
Whether you are trying to avail subsidy benefits or carry out KYC verification, an e-Aadhaar will be considered as a valid ID proof just like its physical copy. Mostly the Aadhaar number is required to complete official paperwork, and that can be easily done by accessing the electronic version of your Aadhaar.
The Aadhaar copy you get online is authorised and digitally signed by UIDAI. Therefore, even if some of the official procedures involve submitting certain identity documents, you can still use your e-Aadhaar.
The procedure of acquiring the digital copy of the Aadhaar card is mentioned below:
Step 1: Visit the official website of UIDAI and look for the ‘Download Aadhaar’ link available on its home page.
Step 2: To use this facility, you need to provide certain details, including your Aadhaar Virtual ID, Enrolment ID, or Aadhaar number. Note that any one of these options should be available to you to proceed further.
Step 3: Once you enter any one of the aforementioned details, you have to enter your full name and PIN code as well.
Step 4: Next, you have to enter the 6-digit security CAPTCHA code shown beside the box. Make sure to enter the accurate code and click on ‘Request OTP’ option.
Step 5: Once you receive the one-time password on your registered mobile number, enter it and click on ‘Download Aadhaar’ option to get the PDF of your digital Aadhaar card via email.
You can open the PDF file of your e-Aadhaar using the set password and make use of it for any official work or verification purposes.

Other than using the online portal of UIDAI, you can also access your DigiLocker Account to obtain your e-Aadhaar. Follow these simple steps for that:
Step 1: To begin this procedure, make sure the DigiLocker app is installed on your mobile device. Now, open it and log in using your credentials.
Step 2: You will find a Search icon on DigiLocker’s home page. Click on it and search by ‘Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)’.
Step 3: A new page will open, where you need to tap on the ‘Aadhaar’ option. You will be able to see a pop-up appearing on the screen.
Step 4: You need to tick the disclaimer first and then click on ‘OK’ to proceed further.
Step 5: Lastly, you will receive an OTP on your registered phone number. Submit the right OTP to download your e-Aadhaar in the application.
DigiLocker app has a specific section called ‘Issued Documents’, where you will find your e-Aadhaar card. You can download, share or view the document from there.

Now that you know how to download and access your e-Aadhaar make sure you keep a copy of this digital document handy. Even if you fail to carry the physical card with you at all times, you can still use this electronic version to authenticate various transactions and services.
You have to access your e-Aadhaar using a specific password. This password is the first four letters in your name, which is then followed by your year of birth. For example, if your name is Shruti and you were born in 1985, your e-Aadhaar password will be SHRU1985.
The UIDAI charges a nominal fee when you want to reprint your Aadhaar card. Note that you will need to pay a fee of Rs. 50 for the reprint. This amount is inclusive of GST and speed post expenses.
A masked Aadhaar is a specialised version of your Aadhaar card, where the first 8 digits of your Aadhaar number remain concealed. You can only see the last 4 digits. It improves the overall security and prevents fraudulent activities.
Individuals looking to open e-Aadhaar on their devices need to have Adobe Reader installed. If you do not own this software, you can get it online at no additional cost. Any other PDF reading software can also enable you to access your e-Aadhaar.
To validate e-signature, you need to download the m-Aadhaar app. Once downloaded and installed, open the app and create your profile. Next, enter your Aadhaar number and scan the QR code. Doing this validates your digital signature.
