Because it helps to get a student or education loan. A PAN card is primarily used by individuals/firms to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) and carry out different financial activities. As students, you may not need to file for ITR but a PAN card is an accepted Government-issued ID card and you can open a bank savings account as well.

You can apply for a student PAN card online through NSDL and UTIITSL.
You can apply for a student PAN card online through the website of NSDL by following these steps:
Click on NSDL online application portal to begin the online application process.
From the ‘Application Type’ choose ‘New PAN – Indian Citizen (Form 49A). From ‘Category’ choose ‘Individual’
Carefully fill up the online PAN application form with necessary details such as name, email id, phone number, date of birth, and more. Check the terms and conditions box, enter the Captcha code and hit ‘Submit’.
Pay the fees for the PAN application fee of Rs. 93 (excluding GST).
Take a printout of the acknowledgement slip, sign the form and paste two recent passport-sized photographs. Send the physical copies of supporting documents along with the form to the NSDL e-Gov below address:

You will receive your PAN card in 15-20 working days after you send the relevant documents.
Students can apply for a new PAN card online through UTIITSL’s official website. To do this, you need to follow these steps:
Step 1: Visit the UTIITSL’s official portal
Step 2: Under the ‘PAN Card Services’ tab, click on the option ‘Apply PAN Card’
Step 3: Scroll down and select ‘PAN Card for Indian Citizen/NRI’
Step 3: Select the PAN card type (physical or digital) you wish to obtain.
Step 4: Next, select ‘Apply for New PAN Card (Form 49A)’
Step 5: Select ‘Digital Mode’, Aadhaar based e-KYC option (if you have an Aadhaar card) and ‘eSign’ mode.
Step 6: Select the ‘Status of the Applicant’ as Individual and ‘PAN Card Mode’ as ‘Both physical PAN Card and e-PAN’. Hit ‘Submit’.
Step 7: Once you are redirected to the next page, fill up all required details such as name, date of birth, address, etc.
Step 8: You will be redirected to the payment page. Complete the payment via your preferred mode (online, cheque or Demand Draft). Upon successful payment, you will receive an acknowledgement slip for future reference.
Step 9: Print this reference slip, attach your photographs and copies of requisite documents and mail it to your nearest UTIITSL office.
You can also apply for a student PAN card offline. Here’s what you need to do:
Step 1: Download Form 49A.
Step 2: If you are below 18 years, you have to apply for a minor PAN card. Fill out the form by providing all necessary information in the application form. Recheck all information to make sure there isn’t any error or discrepancy.
Step 3: Attach the supporting documents with your application form and include two passport-sized photographs.
Step 4: Visit the nearest PAN card centre.
Step 5: Pay the fees as applicable while submitting your application form and supporting documents. You will receive an acknowledgement slip with a unique code. You can use this code for tracking your PAN application status.
Your student PAN card will be issued after verification by concerned authorities.

Ans: There are multiple ways through which you can pay the necessary fees for a PAN application. You may pay through net banking, credit card, debit card, cheque or demand draft. If you are paying through demand draft, make sure it is payable in Mumbai.
Ans: As per government mandates announced on July 1 2017, it is mandatory to provide an Aadhaar while applying for a PAN card. This is applicable for student PAN cards as well. If you are yet to receive your Aadhaar, you can quote the 28-digit enrolment number during the PAN application.
Ans: No, there is no special PAN card for students. Students who are below the age of 18 years have to apply for a minor PAN card. However, if you are a student who is more than 18 years, you have to apply for a regular PAN card.
Ans: Yes, you have to upgrade the minor PAN card to a regular one later on. For this, you will require a recent photograph, signature and other relevant documents. However, your PAN number will remain the same.
