What is the Nifty 50 Index Fund?

The Nifty 50 Index Fund is a type of passively-managed equity fund that tracks the Nifty 50 index in a bid to offer investors optimal returns based on the performance of the index subject to tracking error. The Nifty 50 index comprises top 50 Indian companies with a market capitalisation of more than ₹20,000 crore.

How does the Nifty 50 Index Fund Work?

The Nifty 50 index fund invests in a portfolio of stocks that closely match the composition of the Nifty 50 Index in terms of sectoral representation, market capitalisation, and liquidity. These are passively-managed funds, meaning the fund manager doesn’t actively participate in the buying and selling of stocks. However, the fund manager for index funds is responsible for designing the fund’s portfolio so that it reflects the performance of the Nifty 50 Index as closely as possible.

The performance of Nifty 50 index fund depends on the performance of the underlying stocks present in the Nifty 50 index.

How is the Nifty 50 Index constructed?

A team of professionals at NSE indexes manage the Nifty share index. An Index Advisory Committee offers expertise and guidance on several major issues related to equity indices.

Nifty 50 is a group of 50 important stocks in India. The value of the Nifty 50 index shows the total worth of all the stocks in the group. The starting point for NIFTY 50 is November 3rd, 1995, and at that time, the base value of the index was 1000, and the base capital was 2.06 trillion rupees. The value of the Nifty 50 changes based on how the stock prices of the companies in the group change.

The price index is calculated with the formula given below:

Index value = Current market value / (Base Market Capital * 1000)

The calculation of price index value also takes into consideration the changes in corporate activities. It includes stock splits, right issuance, and more.

Taxation on Nifty 50 Index Fund

Nifty 50 index funds are taxed just like any other index funds. The taxation depends on the holding period and the gains/profits earned. If the holding period is more than 1 year (Long Term Capital Gain) and the profits earned on investments is more than Rs.1 lakh, the gains are subject to 10% tax. If the holding period is less than 1 year (Short Term Capital Gain) and the profits earned on investments is more than Rs.1 lakh, the gains are subject to 15% tax. Gains below Rs.1 lakh are exempt from tax.
