A Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a crucial document that is required for several high-value financial transactions. Considering that individuals usually carry this essential document around with them, the odds of losing it are high.
If your PAN card is misplaced, stolen or damaged, you can easily apply for a duplicate PAN card. Go through the following sections to find out how.
You can find the option to reprint a PAN card online on the TIN/NSDL website. Follow these steps to reprint your lost PAN card with ease:
Step 1
Visit TIN/NSDL’s official website.
Step 2
Find the ‘Apply Online’ option and choose ‘Reprint PAN Card’.
Step 3
After clicking on this option, the page will automatically navigate you to a different pane saying ‘Online Application for Request for New PAN Card Or/ And Changes Or Correction in PAN Data (PAN Change Request Form)’.
Step 4
Make sure to read all information on this page clearly and then go to the bottom of the page to choose the applicant category. After that, click on ‘Select’.
Step 5
In case of a duplicate PAN card for wrong information, fill up the mandatory blanks (marked with *) and tick the corresponding box on the left margin, where you need the correction.
Step 6
If you do not need any correction, you can simply fill the empty fields without ticking any of the boxes.
Step 7
Upload necessary documents and self-attest them before submission. After that, click on ‘Submit’.
Step 8
You will be redirected to the payment gateway. Make the payment for the application through a debit/credit card to complete the process.
Once you have completed the application procedure, you will receive an acknowledgement number. Make sure to keep it securely for future references.
If you don’t want to apply for a lost PAN card online, you can complete the process offline.
Step 1
Visit NSDL’s official website and download the ‘Request for New PAN Card Or/And Changes Or Correction in PAN Data‘ form. You can also download this form from the IT department’s website.
Step 2
Fill out the PAN application form in block letters with a black ink pen.
Step 3
Mention your 10-digit Permanent Account Number.
Step 4
Add two passport-size photographs in the application if you are an ‘Individual’ applicant and sign across the photo.
Step 5
Attach any additional document, if necessary.
Step 6
Make the payment for applicable charges through cash/cheque or DD at the counter to complete the process.
After completing this process, you can also track the status of your duplicate PAN card until you receive the document.
Here is a list of documents that individuals need to submit while applying for a duplicate PAN card:
Before you proceed to apply for a duplicate PAN card, keep these pointers in mind:
You must also note that if you have provided a thumb impression in the application, it will have to be verified by a Gazetted Officer with an official stamp.
Evidently, the process to apply for a duplicate PAN card is simple. However, note that under no circumstances should you own more than two PAN cards at the same time. Under such a circumstance, make sure to surrender the older document at the earliest.
You should receive your duplicate PAN after around 2 weeks from the date of application because that is how long the IT department takes to dispatch your document. In the meantime, you can also track the status of your PAN application.
If you want to receive this document within India, you will have to pay a fee of Rs. 50 (inclusive of taxes). On the other hand, for dispatches outside the country, applicants need to pay Rs. 959 (inclusive of taxes).
If you surrender one of your PAN cards, you will have to write a letter to your assessing officer. Mention vital details about both the cards and mention the card you would like to surrender and the one you would retain.
If you have lost or misplaced your PAN card, it is optional to file an FIR. However, since it is a crucial financial document, it is advisable that you take the legal way and file an FIR to stay on the safe side. After that, you can apply for a reprint at your convenience.
No, when you apply for a reprint, only a new card is issued, and your PAN remains unchanged. In case you need any correction, the new card will bear the necessary changes while your Permanent Account Number remains the same.
