The Income Tax Department provides a 10-digit alpha-numeric code, which is called the PAN (Permanent Account Number). This number allows the IT department to link transactions, including tax payments of the PAN cardholder, with the concerned authority. A PAN card is also an important photo identification document. Previously, the ‘Know Your PAN’ option was available on the IT department’s website. This facility is now replaced with the ‘Verify Your PAN Details’ option.
You can verify your PAN details through the IT department’s website by providing your DOB and name. Just follow these steps:
If all the details are correct, you will receive this message, “PAN is active and details are matching with PAN database”.
Although the date of issue for a PAN card is not essential for verification purposes, you can still find it on the left bottom half of your PAN card.
Individuals can use the online facilities of the IT department to know their PAN card details online and check the legitimacy of their PAN card. It would be beneficial if you remember your PAN to utilise this convenient function.
Ans: Yes, you can request a new card or updates/corrections in the PAN card via the Income Tax Department’s prescribed format. You will have to take the printout of the acknowledgement slip and send it to the NSDL e-Governance office with the necessary documents. Affix a photograph in the empty space and sign across it.
Ans: You can easily track your PAN card application status through the TIN-NSDL website. Simply visit the status track option, select your application type and type in your acknowledgement number. Enter the CAPTCHA to track your PAN card’s status.
Ans: You will have to submit your identity proof, proof of address and age proof to apply for a PAN card. Submit these documents along with Form 49A to complete your PAN card application process.
Ans: Yes, you can also obtain a soft copy of your PAN card. To get this, you will have to visit NSDL’s website. Enter your acknowledgement number and date of birth in the blank fields to receive your e-PAN card conveniently.
Ans: The IT department issues four types of forms for PAN applications. They are Form 49A, Form 49AA, Form 60 and Form 61. Form 49A is for Indian citizens, NGOs, students and minors, and Form 49AA is for Indian nationals who pay taxes in the country but reside outside of India. On the other hand, Form 60 is for individuals below the age of 60, and Form 61 is for people who are at least 60 years old.
