The primary purpose of this scheme was to provide health insurance coverage to poor people suffering from critical illnesses. Every family enrolled under this scheme is entitled to receive Rs.5 lakh annually. This amount is the medical coverage for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization.

Ans: The State Lotteries Department (Taxes) manages the Karunya Health Scheme. Funds for this government initiative are raised through the Kerala Lottery. The amount is used to provide settlement for the empanelled hospitals under this scheme.
Ans: Yes, an individual has to pay a nominal premium charge to be a beneficiary of facilities offered by the Karunya Health Scheme. However, the Government of Kerala settles a major portion of the expenses.
