National Securities Depository Limited was established in 1996 to handle dematerialized securities of the Indian capital market. Later, NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure was separated from NSDL to deal with services other than managing securities.
This company deals with the issuance of PAN cards and is also a central-record keeping agency for NPS (National Pension Scheme). Furthermore, it is responsible for the country’s direct tax infrastructure and provides Aadhaar-based authentication along with e-sign services.
So, what PAN services are offered on NSDL?

NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited (now called Protean eGov Technologies Limited) is authorised by the Income Tax Department (ITD) to provide PAN-related services. This includes the issuance of fresh PAN cards and changes/corrections of existing ones.
You can apply for a new PAN at NSDL online via its official website. Moreover, there are many TIN Facilitation Centres (TIN FCs) and PAN centres around the country that accept new PAN applications.
The following are the various PAN services you can avail yourself at NSDL:
This facility allows applicants who have never applied for a PAN card or do not have any allocated to them to apply for a new PAN. Indian citizens, including those living abroad, have to file Form 49A to get a new PAN card. Foreign applicants can apply for a PAN card using Form 49AA.
Both Indian and foreign citizens can apply for changes/corrections in their PAN data by submitting respective forms. This allows them to get a new PAN card with the updated details (but the same PAN).
This allows applicants to track the status of their PAN application using the 15-digit acknowledgement number. They can do so via TIN NSDL’s official website or by sending an SMS.
Applicants who already have an allotted PAN can apply for a new PAN card through this option.
Financial institutions, banks, insurance companies, credit organizations, etc., are required to validate PAN card details. They can use NSDL’s PAN services to validate individual PAN cards.
Follow the given steps if you have never applied for a PAN before:
Step 1
Go to the official website of TIN NSDL and navigate to the PAN section.
Step 2
Select the application type (Form 49A for Indian citizens), category, and title (Shri/Kumari/Smt). Next, enter your name, DOB (date of birth), contact details, the CAPTCHA code and click on ‘Submit’.
Step 3
Note the given token number and proceed with the application.
Step 4
Select which option you prefer for submitting required documents (e-KYC + e-sign, scanned images + e-sign or forward documents physically).
Step 5
Fill in the rest of the details and click on ‘Next’. Now, enter your income details, address and contact details and click on ‘Save Draft’.
Step 6
Enter information about your Assessing Officer (AO) from the given page and click on ‘Next’ again.
Step 7
You have to upload documents to submit proof of your address, DOB and identity. Finally, upload your photographs and signature. Then click on ‘Submit’.
Step 8
Enter the OTP (One Time Password) received on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
Step 9
Now, you will have to make payment for the dispatch of a physical PAN card. For a communication address in India, you have to pay Rs. 93 (excluding GST), while for foreign addresses, the charge is Rs. 864 (excluding GST).
Step 10
Save and print the receipt containing the 15-digit acknowledgement number.
Step 11
Paste your photographs on the acknowledgement receipt and sign it with a black pen. You have to send this along with supporting documents (if required) to NSDL’s office within 15 days of a PAN application.

When you apply for changes in PAN card data, the application request will be forwarded to the IT Department. After database update and confirmation, a new PAN card will be printed and dispatched to your given address.
Follow these steps for changes/corrections in PAN data:
Step 1
Go to NSDL’s PAN services and log in.
Step 2
Select the option that says ‘Changes or Correction in Existing PAN’ from the application type drop-down menu.
Step 3
Select the category (individual, company, LLP, etc.) and title (Shri, Smt or Kumari). Enter your name, DOB (or date of incorporation/formation), contact information and PAN.
Step 4
Click on the checkbox, enter the CAPTCHA code and click on ‘Submit’.
Step 5
Note the token number and tap on ‘Continue with PAN Application Form’.
Step 6
Select the option for submitting the documents and enter your personal details (parents’ names, Aadhaar number, date of birth, gender, communication address, mobile number etc.). Remember to click the corresponding checkbox on the left side for every relevant change.
Step 7
Select the relevant documents and upload them. After submitting the form, you will have to make a payment using the given options.
Step 8
Take a printout of the acknowledgement slip and send it to NSDL’s office by post.
Applicants who have submitted a PAN card application form can use the 15-digit acknowledgement number to track the status.
Step 1
Go to the official website of TIN NSDL and click on ‘PAN’ under ‘Services’.
Step 2
Tap on ‘Know Status of Your Application’ under PAN.
Step 3
Select the ‘PAN’ option in application type, enter the acknowledgement number, type the CAPTCHA code and click on ‘Submit’.
Alternatively, you can call TIN Call Centre at 020 2721 8080 to enquire about the application status. You can also send NSDLPAN, followed by your acknowledgement number, as an SMS to 57575 for tracking the status.

NSDL offers a range of PAN-related services on its official website. Applicants can apply for a new PAN from NSDL and get reprints for corrections or misplaced/stolen PAN. You will need to send the printed acknowledgement form to the NSDL office in Pune within 15 days of submitting the online application.
Ans: Only someone who already has a PAN card allotted by the IT Department and doesn’t require any change in data can apply for a PAN card reprint. When selecting this option, you cannot update or correct PAN card details. Note that you do not have to submit any application form or supporting documents for a PAN card reprint.
Ans: For new allotment, NSDL dispatches the PAN card with an allotment letter to the applicant’s ‘address of communication’. If they have specified a valid email in the PAN application form, NSDL communicates about delivery via that email. For faster communication, make sure to include an active mobile number.
Ans: If you have chosen the physical mode of submission for NSDL’s PAN application, you have to send the required documents with the acknowledgement slip and photograph to NSDL’s office. You must send these to the following address — NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited, 5th Floor, Model Colony, Pune- 411016, Near Deep Bungalow Chowk.
Ans: After successful submission and payment, the screen will display a 15-digit acknowledgement number. You will receive the acknowledgement in PDF format, along with a payment receipt in your email account. You must save and print this receipt to send it by post for the PAN card application.
Ans: New PAN applicants can download an e-PAN card online from NSDL’s official website using the acknowledgement number and date of birth. Existing PAN cardholders need to pay Rs. 8.26 (unless they had recent changes/corrections) to download the e-PAN card.
