Bombay Stock Exchange – established in 1875, is the largest and the first securities market in the country. It is based in Mumbai and lists around 6,000 companies, making it a significant stock exchange at par with Nasdaq, New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Japan Exchange Group, Shanghai Stock Exchange and London Stock Exchange Group.
BSE assists in developing capital markets, including India’s retail debt market. It has also helped develop the corporate sector in India. BSE also features an equity trading space for small and medium businesses (SMEs).
Over the years, BSE has developed and diversified to offer different capital market services, including settlement, risk management and clearing.
Bombay Stock Exchange is located on Dalal Street in Mumbai, India. The history of BSE trading is quite interesting. During the 1850s, stockbrokers performed business under a banyan tree situated in front of the town hall. After various meetings and as years passed by, Dalal Street became the official location for Stock Brokers’ Association, which later became the BSE.
The stock exchange has gained immense popularity due to faster transactions. Interestingly, the average trade speed in this platform is around 6 microseconds. The market cap of BSE was estimated at around $2 trillion in July 2017.

The period between 3:40 pm and 4 pm is the post-market closing time. During this timeframe bids for the next day’s trade are confirmed. That said, for the confirmation, there have to be adequate buyers and sellers in the stock market.
Muhurat trading is a special trading session that Indian traders follow on the day of Diwali. It is conducted within one hour, which is specified by the stock exchange every year.
According to certain beliefs, trading activities conducted during this time frame bring better possibilities of gaining prosperity and earning wealth around the year. Typically, this trading happens during the evening hours of Laxmi Puja or Diwali. Traders prefer buying stocks as an offering of gratitude towards Goddess Laxmi.

The BSE trading holiday list for 2022 helps traders determine when the stock exchange remains open and closed during a particular year. Take note of the dates on which trading operations remain suspended to avoid any hassle.
Ans: As per the BSE Trading Holiday List of 2022, there are 13 days when the BSE remains closed for equity trading. Thus, the BSE does not allow any trading on Saturdays, Sundays and these listed holidays.
These holidays are applicable for the equity, equity derivatives and SLB segments. In simple words, the market remains closed, and trading doesn’t take place on a trading holiday.
Ans: Yes, there are a few BSE holidays that fall on a Sunday in 2022. These holidays include occasions such as Ram Navami, Maharashtra Day, Id-al-Adha, Gandhi Jayanti and Christmas. Therefore, there are a total of 5 holidays falling on Sundays in 2022.
Ans: Yes, trading hours of the Bombay Stock Exchange can be reduced, advanced or extended depending upon the circumstances. However, keep in mind that the trading hours of the BSE are 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Ans: October and August have the maximum number of holidays in 2022. In August, there are holidays on account of occasions such as Muharram, Independence Day and Ganesh Chaturthi. Similarly, October has three holidays for Dusshera, Diwali/Laxmi Puja and Diwali Balipratipada.
Ans: Muhurat trading, which is unique to Indian traders, started in 1957. The chances of trading success are high during this one-hour time frame, which provides the traders with the best possible results. Muhurat trading drives the market towards a higher closing.
Ans: Muhurat trading will happen on October 24 2022, which is a Thursday. Investors will get a one-hour trading window to carry out their trading activities. The exchange will notify about the timings of Muhurat trading subsequently.
