The Income Tax Department introduced a new e-filing platform on June 7 2021, to facilitate the PAN and Aadhaar linking service. Through this platform, registered and unregistered users, who have a valid Aadhaar and PAN, can link both these documents at ease.

To link your Aadhaar and PAN on the new portal of the Income Tax Department, follow these steps:
Log in to the IT department’s portal and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’.
You will be taken to another page. Here, enter your Aadhaar number, name, PAN and mobile number.
If your Aadhaar only mentions your year of birth, tick the ‘I have only year of birth on Aadhaar card’.
Click on ‘I agree to validate my Aadhaar details’.
Next, click on ‘Link Aadhaar’.
You will receive an OTP on the mobile number that you had previously provided. Enter the OTP in the box and click on ‘Validate’.
After successful completion, you will receive a message confirming that your PAN is linked with Aadhaar.

Click on ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’.
If your PAN is successfully linked with Aadhaar, you will receive a notification indicating the same.

Log in to your account by providing your username and password.
After logging in, click on your username on the top right corner of the screen.
Select ‘My Profile’.
You will be redirected to a new window showing your personal details along with a ‘Linked’ status right next to your Aadhaar number.
Before you link Aadhaar and PAN, keep these pointers in mind:
Here is why linking your PAN and Aadhaar is essential:
Linking PAN and Aadhaar helps the government to keep track of all taxable transactions of individuals. This helps in preventing tax fraud, which was possible earlier.
Oftentimes, individuals obtain multiple PAN cards to avoid paying taxes. By linking PAN and Aadhaar, it would become easier for the IT Department to identify such individuals who have multiple PAN cards registered under one single name.

The new portal of the Income Tax Department makes the ‘link Aadhaar’ service hassle-free. By completing the process online, you can make sure that your PAN stays operational. Moreover, you will be able to enjoy various government benefits and subsidies.
PAN card details such as your name, address, gender, DOB, etc., will be matched against the details in the Aadhaar database. If there is a mismatch with regard to the information, you will have to encounter this error.
You will have to make corrections to either of the two documents. If you want to make corrections on your Aadhaar card, you will have to visit your nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. On the other hand, corrections in PAN card information can be done online by visiting the NSDL website.
Unfortunately, you cannot change your mobile number on your Aadhaar card online. To do so, you will have to first download the Aadhaar correction/enrollment form from the UIDAI’s website. After that, you will have to visit your nearest Aadhaar enrolment center and submit the form along with the supporting documents.
Linking your Aadhaar with PAN is a convenient and straightforward process; You won’t have to submit any document. You will just have to provide a few basic details and enter an OTP. Moreover, you can also complete the process via SMS service.
No, as an NRI, you are exempted from linking these documents. In addition, citizens of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya, and senior citizens over 80 years old do not need to link PAN and Aadhaar.
