The event goes back to 1764, when Shah Alam II, Nawab of Bengal, and Nawab of Awadh joined forces to fight against the East India Company. The battle was fought in Buxar; hence, it is called the Battle of Buxar.
The East India Company won the battle, and the Indian forces lost their territories to the Britishers. The company got the rights to manage the state of West Bengal and collect the revenues from the farmers. The former Bengal Presidency was jointly made up of the current-day states of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, and Bangladesh.
On 12th March 1912, Thomas Gibson Carmichael, the new governor of the Bengal Presidency, took charge of the state. He declared the splitting up of the state into 4 parts: Bengal, Assam, Odisha, and Bihar. Hence, 22nd March is celebrated as Bihar Diwas every year.
Earlier, the event was not celebrated at any level. But to celebrate the spirit of Bihar, the Government decided to celebrate this day every year since 2011. Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, was the first to declare Bihar Diwas as a public holiday.
