Behdienkhlam, which means chasing away the demon of cholera, is also observed as an appeal to gods to prevent any type of disease.
This festival takes place in Jowai (West Jaintia Hills) and includes rituals performed by the Daloi (chief). Young men beat the roofs of every house with bamboo poles to drive away evil spirits, plague and diseases.
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. On the tenth day of the month which is known as ‘Ashura’, the Sunni Muslims practise fasting while Shia Muslims mourn the death of Husayn ibn Ali’s family by beating their chest. The Muslims welcome the new year by praying to Allah for happiness and prosperity.
Ker Puja is an important Hindu festival celebrated in Tripura. This festival is celebrated for two weeks and begins at the end of Kharchi Puja. The guardian god who is known as ‘Ker’ is worshipped in this festival. Although a total of 14 deities are worshipped during Ker Puja, the main guardian deity Vastu Devatha is worshipped as the guardian god.

The rituals include special pujas for Yellamma, a regional form of Mahakali. It also includes thanksgiving to the Goddess for fulfilment of all wishes. A ‘Bonam’, derived from the word Bhojanam, which means meal or feast in Telugu, is also organised.
For the festival, women cook rice with milk, jaggery, vermillion, turmeric and neem leaves in brass or earthen pots and light a lamp on top of the pot. Women carry this on their heads and offer this to the Goddess along with turmeric, vermilion, bangles and sari.
It is a festival celebrated in honour of all the teachers. In India, teachers are known as Gurus. On this day students pay respect to not only their teachers but their elders as well by gifting coconuts, clothes and sweets, which is also known as ‘gurudakshina’. The author of Mahabharata, Veda Vyasa Muni, is also worshipped on this day.
