Sao Joao of St John the Baptist is one of the most well-known festivals in Goa. As per the name, this festival is dedicated to St John the Baptist. The festival is celebrated with people dressing up in vibrantly coloured clothes, community dances and recovering bottles of Feni (local alcoholic drink) by diving into ponds and streams. People even decorate the boats to beautify the atmosphere.
It is one of the most famous festivals in Tripura. The festivities last for seven days and include worshipping 14 gods at the Chaturdashi temple which is near Old Agartala. These 14 or Chaturdashi Devata are Lord Shiva, Durga, Vishnu, Brahma, Lakshmi, Saraswathi, Kartikeya, Ganesha, Ganga, Earth, Agni, Kama, Himavan and Varuna.
The gods and goddesses are taken out of the temple to be washed in the holy water from the stream and then taken back to the temple. Kharchi is derived from the word ‘khya’ which means earth and this festival marks the cleaning of Ama Pechi which is the menstruation cycle of Goddess Earth.
It is a month-long festival and holds special significance in Buddhism, especially for the Tibetan and Mahayana Buddhists of Sikkim. This festival takes place during the full moon and represents the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautam Buddha.
The festivities include lighting up lamps by monks and people in remembrance of Buddha and his teachings. A grand procession starts from the Tsuklakhang Monastery by the monks who chant prayers along the way.
