Beware of UPI Fraud: Stay Safe While You Pay

Navi Secure (1)

UPI has made payments instant and effortless — but that same speed is what scammers exploit. Once money leaves your account via UPI, it’s very hard to reverse. Fraudsters are constantly evolving their tactics, so here’s what to watch out for.

Common UPI Fraud Tactics

  • Malicious Links & Apps: Fraudsters send links via SMS, WhatsApp, or email that install malicious apps on your phone. These apps are designed to steal personal information like your UPI PIN, giving fraudsters access to your account. The best safeguard here is simple: never click on links shared by unknown or suspicious sources.
  • Fake Payment Requests: Scammers send a “collect request” disguised as money being sent to you. Approving it (often with your UPI PIN) actually sends money out of your account.
  • QR Code Scams: Fraudsters share QR codes claiming you need to scan and enter your PIN to receive money. Scanning a QR code and entering your PIN is only ever needed to pay someone — never to receive funds.
  • Remote Access Apps: Posing as customer support, fraudsters ask you to install screen-sharing apps (like AnyDesk or TeamViewer) to “fix an issue,” then use that access to complete transactions on your device.
  • KYC/Account Update Scams: Calls, SMS, or emails claiming your UPI ID or bank account will be blocked unless you “verify” via a link or by sharing your PIN/OTP.
  • Fake Customer Care Numbers: Scammers list fake helpline numbers online for banks or apps like Navi UPI, then trick callers into sharing sensitive details.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Your UPI PIN is only for sending money — never for receiving it. If you’re asked to enter it to “receive” a payment, it’s a scam.
  • Never share your PIN, OTP, or CVV with anyone, including people claiming to be from Navi or your bank.
  • Verify before you scan or click. Don’t scan QR codes or click links from unknown or unsolicited messages.
  • Avoid installing remote access apps at the request of anyone claiming to offer “support.”
  • Use official channels only. Navi UPI will never ask for your PIN or OTP over a call, SMS, or email.
